The structural size in microelectronics decreased over recent decades. This development will continue  in order to achieve higher performance in even smaller components.

The research on materials, processes and structures in the nanometer range serves the development of the future computer chips.​

As the size of the nanoelectronics is decreasing to the size of biologic molecules, the merge of nanoelectronics and biotechnology is very realistic and promising. Not only in the biotechnology the nanoelectronics are helpful, but also in the organic sector could this be beneficial.
